Pro-opiomelanocortin preproprotein, also known as POMC, a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing via cleavage by subtilisin-like enzymes known as prohormone convertases. It regulates the corticosteroid production in the adrenal cortex. Also, POMC is cleaved into ten hormone chains named NPP, gamma-MSH, ACTH, alpha-MSH, CLIP, Lipotropin beta, Lipotropin gamma, beta-MSH, beta endorphin and Met-enkephalin. Defects in the gene that encodes POMC are the cause of POMC deficiency, which is characterized by red hair and adrenal insufficiency. Recombinant human POMC protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E.coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques. |
