It promotes the proliferation and differentiation of cell types displaying the EGF receptor. The biological effects of human TGF-alpha are likely to be mediated by autocrine and paracrine mechanisms in adult and embryonic cells as well as in a variety of tumors and retrovirally transformed cells.
